Sit Smart, Live Better: How Correct Posture Protects Your Health at Work

Contributed by Ms. Shaimaa Ahmed Rashed Ali Alhefeiti, Supervisor – Emiratisation Department

In our daily office routines, prolonged sitting has become unavoidable. However, recent observations have highlighted a repeated occurrence of incorrect sitting postures among some employees, which may have long-term implications for health and well-being.

In line with our ongoing commitment to occupational health and safety, and our goal of fostering a healthy, sustainable work environment, we are pleased to share the attached posture awareness guidelines with the Staff GD. This initiative is designed to raise awareness, encourage healthy habits, and support employee comfort, productivity, and overall well-being.

Stop Sitting Wrong: The Surprising Ways Your Chair May Be Sabotaging Your Health

Incorrect sitting posture—such as slouching or leaving a gap between the lower back and the chair—places excessive strain on the spine. Over time, this can contribute to chronic back pain, spinal stress, and even slipped discs.

Poor posture can also:

  • Restrict blood circulation, potentially leading to increased blood pressure, leg heaviness, or weakness

  • Cause knee pain, especially when sitting on the edge of the chair, forcing the knees to bear weight instead of the back

A Simple Solution: Your Posture Reset

Small adjustments can make a significant difference:

  • Sit all the way back so your hips touch the back of the chair

  • Ensure your entire back is supported, from the lower spine up to the shoulders

  • Eliminate any gap between your lower back and the chair to maintain natural spinal alignment

The Bottom Line

A small change in how you sit today can protect your spine, improve circulation, and prevent long-term discomfort tomorrow. Healthy posture is not just about comfort—it is an investment in your long-term health, focus, and productivity.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we work together to create a healthier and more supportive workplace for everyone.
